The Best Church of God
That Old-Time Religion is a predictable comedic target, so much that enlightened, comic desecration can sometimes feel as rote as "Take my wife." Best Church of God delivers the sacrilegious laughs by turning its fire-and-brimstone on the truly deserving, namely Fred Phelps-style fundamentalists and literal-minded Bible-thumpers. The semi-weekly, Sunday mock-worship — which initially found success at Donny's Skybox — delivers original hymns, hilarious sermons, and tongue-in-cheek prayers. The gags are as well-informed as the staging is inspired: easting yeast, Pastor Dave Shepherd points out, is as much a biblical no-no as adultery.
